Fidelity Bank Green Financing Helps SMEs Cut Power Costs, Boost Productivity

Fidelity Bank Plc has highlighted the role of green energy financing in helping Nigerian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) reduce electricity costs, improve productivity and achieve greater energy reliability amid persistent power supply challenges.

The bank said its Green Financing initiative provides eligible individuals and businesses with access to financing for solar panels, inverters, batteries and other clean energy assets, enabling them to reduce dependence on public electricity supply and fuel-powered generators.

In a statement by Tolulope Rojaiye, a member of the Brand Management team at Fidelity Bank Plc, the initiative was presented as a practical solution to the rising cost of electricity and the financial challenges associated with unreliable power supply.

According to the statement, Nigeria’s evolving power sector, characterised by concerns over electricity pricing, supply reliability and the need for alternative energy sources, has created opportunities for businesses to explore cleaner and more dependable power solutions.

It noted that unreliable electricity places a significant financial burden on small businesses, extending beyond electricity bills to include fuel expenses, generator maintenance, replacement parts, inverter batteries and losses arising from interrupted operations.

The bank observed that fluctuations in grid electricity supply and fuel prices make energy costs difficult to predict, thereby affecting cash flow, productivity and the ability of businesses to provide consistent services to customers.

The statement cited World Bank data published in 2025, which indicated that more than 80 million Nigerians, representing nearly 40 per cent of the country’s population, lacked access to electricity.

It added that even businesses connected to the national grid often experience inconsistent power supply, making generators and inverters essential for daily operations while increasing interest in solar energy systems.

However, the initial cost of acquiring solar panels, inverters and batteries remains a major obstacle for many small businesses seeking to transition to renewable energy.

Fidelity Bank Green Financing seeks to address this challenge by allowing eligible customers to spread the cost of acquiring clean energy equipment rather than paying the entire amount upfront.

The bank explained that businesses could assess the affordability of solar energy financing by comparing monthly repayments with their existing expenditure on fuel, generator maintenance and alternative electricity sources.

It noted that a properly assessed solar power system could help businesses reduce generator usage, maintain essential operations during power outages and achieve better control over energy expenses.

The statement identified restaurants requiring continuous refrigeration, salons dependent on electrical equipment, pharmacies storing temperature-sensitive products and small manufacturing firms operating machinery as businesses that could benefit from more reliable electricity.

It stressed that power interruptions could result in spoiled goods, halted production, cancelled appointments and lost customers, making dependable electricity essential for protecting revenue and sustaining business operations.

The bank also emphasised the importance of assessing each business’s electricity requirements before financing a solar installation to ensure that the system can adequately support essential equipment without imposing unnecessary costs.

According to the statement, an appropriately designed energy system can improve operational continuity, strengthen customer service and allow business owners to concentrate more on production, sales, innovation and expansion.

Beyond businesses, the initiative could also benefit households by supporting access to electricity for lighting, refrigeration, internet connectivity, remote work and educational activities, provided the financing arrangements remain affordable.

The statement further noted that green energy financing could contribute to Nigeria’s economic resilience by supporting the adoption of renewable energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuel-powered generators and helping businesses manage operating costs more effectively.

It maintained that financial institutions have an important role to play in making clean energy solutions more accessible by bridging the gap between the demand for reliable electricity and the initial cost of acquiring the necessary equipment.

The bank expressed optimism that increased awareness and access to financing would encourage more Nigerian businesses to adopt renewable energy systems, improve productivity and strengthen their capacity to withstand electricity supply disruptions.

The statement concluded that Fidelity Bank Green Financing offers eligible customers an opportunity to transform unpredictable energy expenses into a structured investment aimed at improving power reliability, protecting business revenue and supporting long-term growth.
