Nasarawa, Nigeria – A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the National Reading Culture (NRC), on Wednesday, sensitised pupils of Practising Primary School, Ombi 1, Lafia, on the importance of developing a strong reading culture.
The organisation also distributed instructional materials including books, pencils and mathematical sets to the pupils to support their learning.
Mr Oluchukwu Ibeafu, Junior Team Leader of NRC in Nasarawa State, said the initiative was aimed at encouraging education and nurturing the habit of reading among young learners.
Ibeafu described the NRC as a media-driven and innovative organisation committed to promoting literacy and providing visibility for literary works such as poetry, novels and articles.
According to him, the organisation also undertakes community development services including charity programmes and medical outreach.
“One thing that is very vital in any form of building project is the foundation.
“For us, reaching out to children at the nursery, primary and secondary levels is very important because it helps us achieve one of the core aims of NRC, which is to encourage the art of reading,” he said.
Ibeafu added that the organisation also engages students in higher institutions, but emphasised that building a reading culture must start from the early stages of learning.
Also speaking, Ms Sarah Zheira, Convener of the charity project, said the outreach was organised as part of NRC’s efforts to promote reading culture among young pupils.
Zheira explained that she chose to host the event at the school because it was her alma mater where she completed her primary education and served as head girl.
“Our pupils and students these days find it difficult to read and that is one of the main reasons we are here today.
“The aim is to encourage them and inculcate the reading culture in them,” she said.
She added that the gesture would motivate the pupils and remind them of the importance of education and hard work.
In his remarks, the Head Boy of the school, Master David Akachukwu, expressed appreciation to the organisation for the support, noting that the gesture had brought smiles to the faces of the pupils and would encourage them to give their best in their studies.
Also, the Assistant Headmistress of the school, Mrs Benedicta Enaberue, commended the NGO for the initiative and support to the pupils.
Enaberue said the school remained committed to nurturing growth and creating a supportive environment where every pupil feels valued, respected and inspired to reach their full potential. (NAN)
