Northern Christian Religious Leaders Assembly (NOCEELA) has called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint a Senior Special Assistant on Christian and Muslim Affairs to serve as a bridge between the government and faith communities.
The group made the call in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Rev. Dr Simon Dolly-Kif and made available to newsmen on Tuesday.
The group said that in a diverse and multi-religious society like Nigeria, the appointment is not merely a political consideration; it is a strategic national necessity, especially at this time.
He explained that such advisers would serve as vital bridges between the government and faith communities, fostering mutual understanding, promoting peaceful coexistence, and strengthening national unity.
“They would provide informed counsel on religious matters, facilitate constructive dialogue, help prevent and resolve conflicts, and encourage collaboration in addressing social, humanitarian, and national challenges.
“At a time when our nation is confronted with security concerns, economic challenges, and growing social tensions, engaging respected religious leaders through dedicated presidential assistants can enhance public trust, promote inclusiveness, and reinforce the principle that every Nigerian is valued and respected, regardless of religious affiliation,” he added.
NOCRELA noted that religious institutions remain among the most influential pillars of our society. Harnessing their moral authority, extensive grassroots reach, and enduring commitment to peace can make a significant contribution to national stability, reconciliation, social cohesion, and sustainable development.
The group said the appointment of competent, credible, and widely respected Senior Special Assistants on Christian and Muslim Religious Affairs would therefore be a timely and commendable step towards strengthening national unity, deepening interfaith harmony, and advancing the collective interests of our nation.
“As Nigeria continues to strive for peace, justice, and sustainable development, inclusive governance that recognises and engages all major faith communities will further strengthen the bonds of national unity and reinforce our shared commitment to building a prosperous and peaceful nation.
