DEMOCRACY DAY: Gov. Alia Commends National Assembly Over State Police Bill

Governor Hyacinth Alia has applauded the House of Representatives for passing the bill seeking to establish state police across Nigeria, describing the move as a bold and commendable step toward strengthening the nation’s security framework.

The Governor made this known during his Democracy Day broadcast to the people of Benue State on Friday.

Speaking on the significance of the proposed legislation, Governor Alia noted that the bill acknowledges the need for a more localized and responsive policing structure capable of addressing the unique security realities confronting states and Communities across the country.

According to him, the development reflects courage, foresight, and commitment on the part of lawmakers toward safeguarding lives and property of Nigerians.

He called on Nigerians to embrace the initiative in good faith, describing it as a necessary reform aimed at improving public safety and reinforcing grassroots security.

Governor Alia further stated that with proper safeguards, accountability measures, and constitutional oversight, state policing would complement existing security institutions, enhance intelligence gathering, and ensure faster responses to security threats.

He described the passage of the bill as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s collective pursuit of a safer and more secure nation.

The Governor also highlighted efforts by his administration to improve security in Benue State through sustained collaboration with security agencies, the provision of over 150 operational vehicles and 600 motorcycles, as well as the establishment of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards and the Anyam Nyor Joint Task Force.

According to him, these interventions have contributed to improved security and supported the gradual restoration of peace in several parts of the state.
