INEC pledges credible bye-election for Nasarawa North

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured residents of Nasarawa North Senatorial District of its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible bye-election scheduled for June 20.

The bye-election was to be held to replace the Senator representing the area, Sen. Godiya Akwashiki who died in December 2025 as a result of a protected illness.

Alh. Muhammad Abubakar-Sadiq, Resident Electoral Commissioner for Nasarawa State, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lafia.

The REC explained that the commission had declared the date for the election and arrangements are in place to ensure proper coverage of the 583 polling units of the 35 electoral wards of the district comprising Akwanga/Nassarawa-Eggon/Wamba Local Government Areas.

He urged politicians, political parties, aspirants and the people of the area to conduct themselves peacefully and adhere strictly to the guidelines of the conduct of the bye-election as released by the commission.

“Arrangements are on to mobilise men and materials when it is time for the conduct of free, fair and credible bye-election.

“We are collaborating with security agencies to ensure that polling units are manned on the day of the election and to ensure the general success of the exercise,” Abubakar-Sadiq added.

The Resident Commissioner further stressed that notice of election would be on May 21, conduct of party primaries is May 22-26, submission of candidates, May 29-June 2, and publication of the list of candidates is on June 9.

He noted that the campaign by candidates and political parties would begin on June 10 and end on June 18, while the last day for submission of names of polling agents by candidates is June 11. (NAN).
