The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has reaffirmed its current leadership, returning Professor Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe as National Chairman for a second term.
Gombe was re-elected unopposed on Saturday during the party’s 2026 National Convention, held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi.
The event also saw the return of 11 other members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) as the party begins its strategic build-up to the 2027 general elections.
Key officials joining Gombe in the new leadership cycle include Senator Ugochukwu Uba (Deputy National Chairman, South), Dr. Olu Agunloye (National Secretary), and Hajiya Mariam Maggie Batubo (National Treasurer).
In his acceptance speech, Professor Gombe characterized the new term as a “rescue mission,” positioning the SDP as the primary patriotic alternative to Nigeria’s current political landscape.
“Nigeria is facing serious challenges that require upright and committed leadership,” Gombe stated. “I want to assure you that the SDP, under our watch, will lead with transparency and a commitment to the welfare of all Nigerians” He said.
Gombe highlighted Nigeria’s projected population growth set to become the world’s third-largest within two decades as a critical reason for establishing a viable political alternative now.
He pledged that his team would operate as “servant leaders” in strict adherence to the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.
The Chairman expressed gratitude to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for hosting the convention, despite belonging to a different political party.
Gombe noted that such cross-party cooperation is essential for the survival of Nigerian democracy.
The re-elected chairman concluded by urging party faithful to remain steadfast, promising that the leadership would not betray the confidence reposed in them.
