The North Central Zonal Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Salihu Adamu, has raised concerns over alleged high-handedness and intimidation of members by the Nasarawa State Chairman of the union.
He called on the state government and security agencies to urgently intervene and restore order within the union.
Alhaji Adamu made the appeal while briefing journalists after an emergency meeting with aggrieved members in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The development follows an incident in March 2026, when some NURTW officials, mainly from branches in Karu LGA, reportedly visited the union’s National Headquarters in Abuja to enforce a court judgment.
Subsequently, the Nasarawa State leadership of the union suspended the affected officials, citing alleged violations of provisions of the union’s constitution.
Reacting to the suspension, Alhaji Adamu, who is also a former State Chairman of the union, described the action as unjustified and detrimental to the unity and progress of the NURTW.
He urged the state leadership to prioritise inclusiveness, development, and the overall growth of the union rather than actions capable of causing division.
“The suspended officials were duly elected by members at their respective branches. They were suspended without fair hearing, simply for accompanying others to Abuja to enforce a court judgment which upheld the election of Tajudeen Baruwa as the legitimate National President of our union,” he said.
In a swift response, the State Secretary of the NURTW in Nasarawa, Comrade Idris Adamu, who signed the suspension letters, maintained that the action was in line with Article 42, Subsection 5 of the union’s constitution.
He stressed that the union remains a critical stakeholder in national service and that the state leadership would not tolerate any action capable of undermining peace and stability among its members.
“Only six branch officials from Karu Local Government Area were suspended. The measure was taken to allow for investigation into their alleged involvement in the reported breach at the National Headquarters in Abuja. The union’s constitution does not permit branch officials to visit the national headquarters without authorisation,” he added.
The NURTW has recently been embroiled in a leadership crisis, with rival factions laying claim to legitimacy under the leadership of Tajudeen Baruwa and Musiliu Akinsanya.
