APC in Turmoil: Wave of Defections, New Alliances Rock Nasarawa as Dogo Shammah Leads Political Shake-Up

A major political storm is brewing in Nasarawa State as a wave of defections, strategic alignments, and fresh political repositioning threatens to fracture the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The latest twist in the unfolding drama is the emergence of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a newly formed political party that is already drawing attention across the state’s political landscape.

The movement is being spearheaded by a prominent politician and former Information Commissioner in the State, Dogo Shammah, who was recently appointed as the pioneer State Chairman of the NDC.

His appointment was ratified during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja under the supervision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Shammah’s emergence comes on the heels of his dramatic resignation from the APC on March 31, 2026, a move widely seen by political observers as a significant blow to the ruling party and a signal of deeper cracks within its ranks in Nasarawa State.

A New Political Force Emerges

In a statement announcing the development, the NDC described itself as more than just a political party, but a “movement” aimed at restoring power to the people through inclusive governance, transparency, and grassroots-driven development.

The party outlined an ambitious agenda centered on youth empowerment, job creation, agricultural transformation, and improved infrastructure and social services. It also pledged to uphold transparency and accountability by opening government processes to public scrutiny.

APC Under Pressure

The formation of the NDC is the latest in a series of political shifts that analysts say point to growing dissatisfaction within the APC in Nasarawa State. The defection of key figures like Shammah is fueling speculation of further exits, potentially weakening the party’s structure ahead of future elections.

Call for Mass Mobilisation

The NDC has called on residents, community leaders, and stakeholders across the state to join what it described as a “growing movement for renewal.” The party also announced plans to formally inaugurate its state executive committee and unveil a comprehensive manifesto in the coming weeks.

As political tensions rise, all eyes are now on Nasarawa State, where the battle for loyalty, influence, and control appears to be entering a new and unpredictable phase.
