Group want military to release or prosecute officers detained for misconduct

A group under the aegis of Concerned Pro-Democratic Activists of Nigeria has appealed to the authorities of the Nigerian Military to release the 16 officers who have been detained since October 2025 or to prosecute them in accordance with the law.

Comr. Yusuf Musa-Dauda, Chairman of the group made the call at a press conference on Sunday in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report that the Nigerian Defence Headquarters through its former Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, on October 4, 2025, said that the officers were detained for indiscipline and breach of service regulations.

The military authority at that time said that investigations showed that the grievances of the detained officers were linked to repeated failure in promotion examinations and perceived career stagnation.

However, the Pro-Democratic group said that some other sources rumoured that the officers were detained for an alleged coup plot which they noted that the military had debunked the rumour.

Musa-Dauda said they strongly condemned a coup plot or attempt by anybody or any group of persons.

He however, appealed to the Federal Government and other authorities concerned to ensure justice in the matter.

“From the information available to us, some of the officers are seriously ill in detention without any proper medical attention.

“Their family members were denied access to see or speak to them since October 2025, and it has created serious tension among their loved ones,” he added.

He said in the meantime, the authorities should give them medical attention and allow their families to see and speak to them.

The group therefore, appealed that the authorities should release them if there is no case against them or otherwise prosecute them to prove the allegations against them in the interest of justice. (NAN).
