Plateau Lawmaker Commissions Water Project, Assures Mangu South Constituents of More Development

The member representing Mangu South in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Matthew Kwarpo, has assured his constituents of sustained development and improved delivery of democratic dividends.

Kwarpo gave the assurance on Wednesday during the re-commissioning of a motorised borehole at Rampia and the inspection of an ongoing solar-powered water project at Layir, both in Mangu District of Mangu Local Government Area.

The re-commissioned borehole was originally initiated in 2019 by a son of the community and former immigration officer, late ACG Haruna Sa’idu Dawop. The facility later broke down before his son commenced efforts to repair it. Hon. Kwarpo subsequently intervened to complete the project by providing a protective structure and tiling the surroundings to enhance hygiene and ease of use.

Commending the intervention, the Village Head of Rampia, Da Daniel Dawop, and the District Head of Mangu, Da Moses Dawop, described the borehole as a critical source of water for the community and neighbouring settlements.

The traditional leaders urged residents to safeguard the project and called on well-meaning individuals to continually give back to their communities through initiatives that improve living conditions.

Speaking on behalf of the women, the Women Wing Leader of the Mwagavhul Development Association (MDA) in Rampia, Mrs. Plangnan Haruna Dawop, expressed appreciation to the project initiators and the lawmaker, noting that access to clean water had brought renewed life to the community. She described water as essential to survival and development.

The borehole was formally handed over to the leadership of women and youth wings of the Mwagavhul Development Association in Rampia, for monitoring and maintenance.

At Layir, Hon. Kwarpo inspected a solar-powered borehole project initiated by him, which he said had reached about 95 per cent completion and would be commissioned within a month. He explained that the project was undertaken in response to urgent demands from the community and appreciated the individual who donated land for the facility at no cost.

The lawmaker appealed to residents to take collective ownership of the project to ensure its sustainability.

Earlier, Hon. Kwarpo participated in a sensitisation campaign against illicit drug consumption organised by the Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN) in Mangu Local Government Area, where he warned against the dangers of drug abuse, particularly among young people.

Also speaking at the rally, the Mangu Field Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), ACN Hassan Kuulyidam, cautioned that drug abuse fuels crime and insecurity. She called on the local government council to consider establishing an NDLEA office in the area to effectively address the growing menace.

In a related development, the lawmaker attended a stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Mangun Ward, where he presented party flag and membership card to the councilor representing the ward.

The Councillor received the formal presentation on behalf of politicians who recently defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, following the governor’s defection and directive to elected officials and appointees to align with the ruling party.
