The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) frontline candidate for Nasarawa North Senatorial District Bye- election, Dr David Ombugadu has vowed to put in place multiple layers of securities ahead of June 20 bye-election to protect the people’s mandate.
Ombugadu stated this while speaking with newsmen shortly after intense campaigns in several communities on Friday in Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area.
Ombugadu was speaking against the backdrop of an alleged plan to rig the bye -election being speculated in some quarters.
He enjoined electorates and teeming supporters not to be deterred by the alleged rigging plan, noting that his team would act within constitutional provisions to ensure the credibility of the polls.
“You know how politicians are, but our primary duty is to ensure everything is watertight.
“As far as I’m concerned, I will put my people on the ground. I will do what is constitutionally expected of me to ensure the right agents are deployed to do the job.”
He stressed the need for vigilance and strong collaboration with security agencies to avert electoral malpractice.
“We are putting multiple layers in place to make sure such incidents are averted. It is important for anyone with complaints to approach the security agencies and institutions responsible for policing electoral malpractice,” he added.
Ombugadu maintained that the responsibility to safeguard votes ultimately rests with the electorates
“Our focus is to get our people to do what is expected — policing and defending their mandate. Only the people can avert this when they rise to the occasion and stand strong to correct such irregularities,” he said.
He noted that while his team is working with intelligence, proactive steps are equally critical.
“As much as we are working with intelligence, we must also devise means of preventing it before it happens,” he said.
