The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr Margaret Elayo, has expressed satisfaction with the high level of compliance among residents.
She enjoined the residents to sustain compliance, especially in keeping Lafia, the State Capital, clean.
Elayo stated this on Saturday in Lafia while briefing newsmen shortly after the sanitation exercises.
She, however, said some arrests have been made during the exercise, noting that the offenders, mainly motorcycle and tricycle riders, would be prosecuted and fined according to environmental law.
The Commissioner, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr Ede Yakubu, said that the Government would take decisive action against the cassava processing centre at Tundu Kauri due to poor hygiene and environmental pollution.
She explained that the cassava processing centre would be sealed if they refused to adhere strictly to the sanitation law, noting that their activities constituted a hazard to the community.
“Although we appreciate their business because it is part of a small-scale business, we are going to look into it, and if possible, efforts will be made to set aside a particular place for that business.
“Because that particular place the business is operating now is not a business community but a residential area,” she said.
She urged people of the state to support the efforts of the Government to keep the environment and surroundings clean for their overall health.(NAN)
