Director Muhammadu Biuhari Institute for Research and Training, Federal University of Lafia, Professor Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu has advocated the establishment of a national policy on scientific research to enhance technological development and innovation in the country.
Professor Sadiq Aliyu gave this indication in Lafia during a news briefing to give an update on a research exercise carried out by the university to produce an X Ray Radiation Shielding Glass.
He explained that the research exercise which was funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, was undertaken to produce a high quality radiation shielding glass for X – Ray machine using local materials such as rice husks and tin ore.
According to the Professor of Nuclear Physics, the exercise which had reached eighty percent conclusion was carried out by researchers from relevant faculties in the Federal University of Lafia in collaboration with some institutions outside the country.
Professor Sadiq Aliyu noted the research work would mark a breakthrough in the promotion of science and technology in the country as it centred on local content for the development of Nigerian universities and industries.
He stressed the need for the Nigerian Government to create a policy framework aimed at bringing private industrial films under one roof for funding and sponsoring scientific research and innovations as part of the drive towards achieving technological advancement.
