Nasarawa govt. promises to conclude prosecution of criminal cases within 4 weeks

Barr Labaran Magaji, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General (AG) has promised to ensure that criminal cases are concluded within the period of four weeks in line with the vision of the state government to ensure speedy dispensation of justice.

The AG made the pledge on Tuesday in Lafia while playing host to the leadership and members of Correspondent’s Chapel of the Nasarawa State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). 

The commissioner explained that he has already chosen few cases for experiment to prove that it is possible and the state would achieve it.

The Attorney-General frowned about the needles delay in the justice administration and attributed it to the attitude of some counsels who are found of filling unnecessary motions and counter motions.

On the congestion of correctional facilities in the state, the commissioner said all hands must be on deck to tackle the menace.

He however said that the state government was ready to review cases of inmates detained wrongly to set them free in line with the law.

He advised members of the public to continue to be law abiding and desist from being in confrontation with the law as part of the steps not to congest the custodian facilities.

He also reinstated his commitment to ensure the full enforcement of all domesticated such as Child Right Law, Anti Kidnapping law, Gender based law and others.

He explained that Gov. Abdullahi Sule has given him the go ahead to activate the enforcement of the laws in order to protect the vulnerable especially women and children.

The also Attorney-General added that the team of counsels from the ministry is ready to prosecute any person no matter his or her status if he commits a crime against the state.

“With my background as a public prosecutor, I will bring my experience to bear to ensure adherence to the rule of law in the state.

“I have served as a public prosecutor for the past 10 years and the ministry under my watch would do its best to ensure due process and rule of law,” the Commissioner for Justice added.

He added that he has already paid advocacy visit to all the stakeholders in the criminal justice system to ensure that we work together for the smooth administration of justice in the state.

He also expressed gratitude to the Correspondent’s Chapel for the visit and promised to work with journalists to propagate the activities of the ministry.

Earlier, Mr. Isaac Ukpaju, Chairman of the Correspondent’s Chapel congratulated the commissioner on his appointment and assured him of thier readiness to report his activities professionally. (NAN).
