The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed 1,000 bags of maize flour and 5,000 bags of NPK fertilizer to vulnerable households and farmers across Bauchi State.
The initiative is part of the commission’s ongoing efforts to alleviate hunger, support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and boost agricultural production during the current rainy season.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, the NEDC Bauchi State Coordinator, Alhaji Aliyu Isiyaku, stated that the intervention aligns with the commission’s broader mandate to revitalise the North-East region and improve the livelihoods of its residents.
According to Isiyaku, the distribution of the maize flour was specifically targeted at cushioning the current economic hardships faced by indigent residents and IDPs.
Responding to the gesture, the Bauchi State Chairman of Internally Displaced Persons, Malam Buba Musa Shehu, expressed deep gratitude for the timely food intervention.
“The maize flour distributed to our people at this particular time has truly been a great help to us,” Shehu said.
He further appealed to the NEDC and other donor agencies to provide IDPs with better social amenities, consistent food supplies, and sustainable livelihood tools to foster self-reliance.
To enhance regional food security, the NEDC channeled 5,000 bags of NPK fertilizer through trusted farming associations and direct distribution channels to local farmers.
“Our primary objective is to ensure that farmers have access to modern agricultural inputs to achieve a bountiful harvest,” Isiyaku explained, emphasizing that fertilizer is the most critical input for farmers during the rainy season.
Local farmers who benefited from the scheme praised the commission for the perfect timing of the delivery. Saidu Abubakar, a local beneficiary, noted:
“This fertilizer came just when I desperately needed it for my farm.”Safiya Musa Adamu, another beneficiary, commended the commission for supporting them during a critical phase of the planting season.
The NEDC has assured residents that it will sustain its community-targeted interventions to drive economic recovery and support vulnerable populations across the region.
