Bala Wunti, APC’s Strongest Hope in Bauchi

By Suzan Edeh, Bauchi

Bauchi State’s political space is steadily witnessing a powerful grassroots shift as support for Dr. Bala Maijama’a Wunti continues to spread across communities, wards, and local government areas ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

What began as isolated endorsements from admirers of his humanitarian interventions has now escalated into a broad-based movement cutting across party stakeholders, youth groups, women associations, councillorship aspirants, opinion leaders, and ordinary citizens who increasingly see him as the most electable and unifying figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and across party divides.

From Warji to Tafawa Balewa and beyond, from Zaki to Toro, one message appears consistent among APC members and even non-pary members at the grassroots: Bala Wunti represents the party’s brightest chance of retaining power in Bauchi State.

Recent political engagements organised by the Bala Wunti Support Organisation (BWSO) in various local government areas have exposed the depth of public acceptance enjoyed by the renowned technocrat and humanitarian.

In Warji Local Government Area, APC councillorship aspirants and party stakeholders openly declared their support for his governorship ambition after what they described as careful observation of his contributions to community development and social welfare across the state.

Their position reflects a growing political reality within the APC — that popularity among ordinary people, especially at the grassroots, may ultimately determine the party’s electoral survival in 2027.

For many supporters, Dr. Wunti’s appeal goes beyond politics. His interventions in education, healthcare, youth and women empowerment, economic support, and humanitarian assistance have created a direct emotional connection with thousands of families across Bauchi State. Unlike politicians who emerge only during election cycles, Bala Wunti’s presence has consistently been felt through initiatives that impact daily lives.

This growing bond between him and the people explains why support for his aspiration is expanding organically across communities without coercion or excessive political pressure. In many areas, local stakeholders are voluntarily mobilising support because they believe his candidacy reflects the aspirations of ordinary citizens who desire inclusive leadership and people-oriented governance.

The recent grassroots mobilisation in Tafawa Balewa Local Government further reinforced this momentum. Support groups, community actors, women groups, youth associations, and media influencers embarked on coordinated sensitisation campaigns aimed at taking Bala Wunti’s message directly to the people through ward-to-ward and door-to-door engagements.

Such political energy at the grassroots level is rarely accidental. It is usually driven by genuine public confidence in a candidate’s credibility, accessibility, and capacity to lead.

Observers within the APC increasingly acknowledge that Bala Wunti’s political strength lies not merely in elite endorsements but in his growing acceptance among ordinary voters spread across rural and urban communities alike. His support base appears to transcend traditional political blocs, giving him a unique advantage in a highly competitive political environment.

More importantly, many party loyalists fear that ignoring this widespread grassroots sentiment could prove politically costly for the APC.

Across several local government areas, party members openly argue that presenting any candidate perceived as disconnected from the grassroots may weaken APC’s electoral chances and create room for opposition forces to capitalise on internal dissatisfaction. For them, Bala Wunti’s candidacy offers not just popularity but political stability, unity, and voter confidence.

This concern is amplified by the increasing political awareness among voters who now place greater emphasis on performance, compassion, accessibility, and tangible community impact rather than empty rhetoric or political godfatherism.

Supporters also point to Bala Wunti’s demonstrated loyalty and maturity within the APC as qualities that distinguish him from many ambitious politicians. His decision to allow internal party processes to proceed without confrontation during the recent APC congresses earned him admiration among party stakeholders who viewed the move as evidence of discipline and respect for democratic principles.

His subsequent visit to formally identify with the newly elected APC leadership further strengthened perceptions of him as a team player committed to party unity above personal ambition.

At a time when internal crises and factional politics continue to threaten the stability of political parties nationwide, many APC members in Bauchi State see Bala Wunti as a bridge-builder capable of uniting various interests within the party while also attracting wider public support ahead of the governorship election.

His donation of 24 fully-air conditioned buses to the party to strengthen the coming campaigns for candidates for all elective positions is unprecedented because politicians in Bauchi State are only used to providing logistics support to their personal ambitions.

So also has his Ramadan intervention involving the distribution of 4,500 bags of rice and ₦65 million to APC executives and stakeholders across the state further deepened his popularity among party members and vulnerable citizens. To supporters, the gesture reflected empathy, generosity, and a leadership style rooted in service to humanity.

As a consequence, political analysts who follow Bala Wunti’s monumental popularity among the people believe such sustained humanitarian engagement has significantly strengthened his grassroots appeal and elevated his image beyond conventional politics.

As consultations intensify ahead of the APC governorship primaries, the momentum behind Bala Wunti continues to grow across all senatorial zones and local government areas of the state.

Apart from the pledges made by thousands of communities to support the aspiration of Bala Wunti that are unreported, the few open endorsements emerging from different communities are no longer isolated incidents; they are increasingly becoming a statewide movement anchored on trust, loyalty, inclusiveness, and visible impact.

Within APC circles, many stakeholders now quietly admit that the party may face serious electoral risks if it ignores the prevailing mood at the grassroots. For a party seeking victory in a competitive political environment, the choice of candidate may ultimately determine whether APC consolidates its position or loses valuable public confidence.

For many ordinary voters across Bauchi State, Bala Wunti is no longer merely an aspirant — he has become the symbol of continuity, grassroots connection, and the APC’s strongest pathway to electoral success in 2027. Thus, the Talakawas of Bauchi State refer to this fast expanding movement as the Bala Wunti Phenomenon.
