Plateau Govt Reacts to High Court Ruling on LG Tenure, Assures Stability

The Plateau State Government has responded to a recent High Court judgment concerning the tenure of Local Government Chairmen, assuring residents that governance at the grassroots level remains unaffected.

The ruling, delivered on March 13, 2026, by the State High Court, focused on the interpretation of Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) regarding the tenure of local government officials.

Statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Joyce Ramnap, in Jos on Wednesday, said the government acknowledged the judiciary’s constitutional role in interpreting the law and expressed respect for the court’s decision.

According to the statement, the state government is currently reviewing the judgment in detail, working closely with its legal team to fully understand its implications and determine appropriate next steps. It noted that all lawful options remain open, including the possibility of seeking further clarification through the appellate courts.

The government emphasized that the judgment does not disrupt the day-to-day administration of local government councils or the delivery of essential services across the state.

Residents, community leaders, and political stakeholders were urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on sustaining peace and development in Plateau State.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance, the administration of Gov. Caleb Mutfwang pledged to continue strengthening institutions, promoting stability in local government administration, and ensuring that governance at all levels serves the best interests of the people.
