The Nasarawa State chapter of the Labour Party has declared a top stakeholder of the party in the state, Ashime Benjamin as the candidate for the forthcoming By-election in the Nasarawa North Senatorial District of the state, slated for June 20, 2026.
Our correspondent gathered that Benjamin emerged through consensus and affirmation votes during a stakeholders meeting which was attended by party officials and delegates drawn from across the Nasarawa North Senatorial Zone.
Chairman of Labour Party in the state, Alexander Ombugu made the disclosure on Thursday while speaking with Journalists in Lafia, the state capital.
According to him, the senatorial primary election which was held in the Akwanga Local Government Area of the state, had a team of officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission, who observed the process as directed by the electoral umpire.
The Nasarawa State LP Chairman noted that Benjamin’s endorsement reflected the collective decision of party members and leaders across the zone, stressing that the party remained united ahead of the 2026 By-election and 2027 general elections.
“Having fulfilled the requirements of the Nasarawa North Primary Election of the Labour Party, Ashime Benjamin was declared the candidate for the forthcoming By-election in the zone which is expected to hold on June 20, 2026,” Ombugu said.
He said the party was confident that Benjamin remained the most credible candidate to lead the LP into the By-election contest.
Ombugu added, “As a party, we are united and determined to win the By-election. The endorsement of Ashime Benjamin is a reflection of the confidence the people and the party have in him, and we promise to continue to give him the needed support to succeed.”
When contacted to get his reaction, Ashime Benjamin expressed appreciation to the Labour Party executives in the zone and the state at large, and his supporters for the confidence reposed in him, assuring them of his commitment to the struggle ahead of the election.
He said the support shown by the party members demonstrated that the LP remained strong and connected to the people at the grassroots.
He added that his decision to join the race was to offer quality representation, given his grassroots connection with the people of the zone, and to continue with the legacies of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki.
“I promise to work hard to ensure that I justify the confidence reposed in me by the party executives and members. If elected, I will ensure that I sponsor bills that will help to improve the livelihoods of people of the senatorial zone,” he emphasised.
Our correspondent further reports that party supporters at the gathering applauded the affirmation of Ashime Benjamin and pledged their continued support for the Labour Party ahead of the Nasarawa North senatorial election and the 2027 general elections.
