INTRODUCTION: Politics, at its core, is about how communities organize power, justice, and resources. When viewed through the lens of Holy Scripture, politics is not merely about governance but about righteousness living and leading in alignment with God’s standards of justice, mercy, and truth. The Bible offers a vision of political life that transcends self-interest and calls leaders and citizens alike to embody righteousness in both personal conduct and public responsibility. The politics of righteousness is an approach to governance and civic life that prioritizes moral integrity, ethical probity, and the common good over strict party loyalty or ideological warfare. In an era of intense polarization, moving beyond the partisan mind requires a shift from demonizing the other toward a shared commitment to universal human dignity.
RIGHTEOUSNESS AS THE FOUNDATION OF LEADERSHIP THAT IS BEYOUND PARTISANSHIP: The Bible insists that true leadership must be rooted in righteousness that is beyond partisanship as seen in:
- Proverbs 14:34 “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.”
- Proverbs 29:2 “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people groan.”
- Psalm 72:1-2 “Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice.”
Political authority is not for self-enrichment but for the flourishing of the people. Leaders are accountable to God for how they wield power. Partisan politics often prioritizes power over principle. Scripture reminds us that nations flourish when leaders and citizens pursue righteousness.
TRANSCENDING THE PARTISAN MIND: Partisanship often creates a partisan brain, where individuals become more receptive to fake news and less receptive to facts that threaten their group identity. A politics of righteousness seeks to dismantle this binary by focusing on universal humanity, ethical probity and the common good.
CONCLUSION: For politics to truly move beyond the partisan mind, it must return to its root definition: “the science and art of civil government for all citizens”. This requires leaders who are men of truth who hate covetousness and prioritize national unity over party dominance. True righteousness in the public square is not about winning an election, but about establishing a throne or system of governance on the foundation of justice and equity. In God’s kingdom, politics is not about domination but about righteousness that brings peace, justice, and flourishing for all. Therefore, the politics of righteousness is not a slogan. It is measured by competent delivery, transparent processes, inclusive service, active peacemaking, and a citizenry that demands the same standard of itself. Where these are present, the nation rejoices, regardless of which party holds the seat.
