Flood Kills 6, Displaced Hundreds of People in Plateau

At least no fewer than 6 persons have been reportedly killed by flood in some communities of Plateau State .

Members representing the affected communities in the Plateau State House of Assembly raised the alarm during plenary on Thursday under matters of urgent public importance.

While calling for emergency humanitarian assistance to the survivors and victims’ families, the members noted that hundreds of their constituents have been displaced by the flood that destroyed their houses.

Member, representing Pankshin North, Philip Dasun explained to his colleagues that in Yelleng Community, 3 people were killed by the flood while many were hospitalized due to the heavy flood.

Also, member representing Jos North-North, Ibrahim Baba Hassan said “I stand with a heavy heart to inform the house that as I speak, 2 of my constituents have died due to flood and many are hospitalized” he said.

He said the downpour of Wednesday, 31 August, wrecked havoc in Rikkos and Gangare communities respectively and hundreds of the residents are displaced.

Member representing Langtang South Constituency, Sohchang Zingtim also said one life was lost from his Constituency on the 23 of August as a result of the flood and the impact of the damage on his people are much. He solicited for an urgent intervention by relevant emergency assistance agencies.

Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Yakubu Sanda while responding, sympathized with the victims and committed the issue to House Committee on Environment to visit the affected communities to ascertain the level of destruction and report to house.
