Centre advocates full implementation of Child Rights Law in Nasarawa State

The Centre for Women, Youth and Community Action (NACWYCA) has advocated for full implementation of the ‘Child Rights Law’ in Nasarawa State.

Dr Nawoni Aboki, Executive Director, NACWYCA made the call at the one-day round table discussion on the full implementation of the child rights law in Lafia.

According to him, the round table discussion aimed at building popular support with key stakeholders toward ensuring full implementation of the Child Rights law in Nasarawa State.

“For the past two years, with the support from USAID and Palladium, we have been working on SCALE project to ensure that the mykey structures are put in place for the implementation of Child Rights law.

“Government has done much, however, so much needs to be done, some structures are there but they are not functioning.

“So, we need more effort from the Government for the implementation of the act, we will continue to push to ensure the key things are put in place to ensure that the law is fully implemented,” he said.

Dr Nawoni said the Centre would continue to work in collaboration with the relevant ministries, agencies and stakeholders as well as sharing ideas to get the law implemented fully.

“We will continue to educate people to understand what these abuses are, and what role they can play to ensure there is justice for whoever that has been violated,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr Isaac Edor, Nasarawa State Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice said the Ministry has done a lot in implementing Nasarawa state child rights law.

“So far, we have prosecuted child rights offenders, especially sexual molestation. We have also created the department to take care of issues related violation of child rights act.

On his part, Emmanuel Yonah Permanent Secretary Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development said the state has made significant strides in implementing policies aimed at safeguarding children’s rights.

“The discussion around child rights law and its enforcement have gained momentum, through collaborative efforts between my Ministry and NACWYCA, the implementation of the law was successfully included in the state budget,” he said.

The one-day round table discussion had in attendance the representatives of the Ministry of Justice, Correctional Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers, media, among others.
