Persistent Attacks: Plateau Assembly calls for Security Summit

Following the continuous attacks on some villages in Plateau state, the state House of Assembly has called on the executive to as a matter of urgency convey a security summit involving all relevant stakeholders in the state to chart a way of curbing the security challenges.

This was the resolution of the house during Thursday’s plenary following a motion by members representing Mangu South, Matthew Kwarpo and Bokkos constituency, Sylvester Wallanko.

The Joint motion by the members representing Mangu South, Matthew Kwarpo and Bokkos, Sylvester Wallanko in the State House of Assembly was due to the continuous attacks by militias on the two constituencies.

Member representing Mangu, Matthew Kwarpo noted that despite the presence of security personnel in the areas attacks have continued unabated with a recent attack on the night of 17th April 2024.

Further commenting on the motion, member representing Bokkos State constituency, Sylvester Wallanko observed that the insecurity in Plateau state if not nibbed in time constitutes a threat to food security as the two Constituencies are predominantly agricultural areas .

Contributing on the motion, Member representing Dengi constituency, Idris Kalamu expressed worry that several resolutions on security were made by the House but are yet to be implemented.

He opined that if the insecurity is not addressed, the state will remain backward in terms of development.

Passing a resolution on the issue, Speaker of the House, Gabriel Dewan said the legislators would investigate the attacks in kopnaanle, Mangu Local government area among others.

Also at the plenary, Member representing Langtang North Central Daniel Nanbol Listick presented a motion calling on the 10th Assembly to consider and continue with bills of relevance from the 9th Assembly as enshrined in order 13 rule 16 of the standing order of the Plateau state House of Assembly 2021.
