A Non Governmental Organization, known as Afropolitan Media Limited in collaboration with the Federal Inland Revenue Service has trained 50 journalists in Nassarawa State on Nigerian Tax Administration.
At the opening of the one day training in Karu local government area of the state, Chief Executive Officer of the NGO, Hajiya Aisha Halilu Umar said the initiative was to expose the media professionals to their roles in complementing the federal government’s drive towards economic recovery.
A financial expert and a facilitator at the workshop, Mallam Shehu Mohammed said tax payment is one of the critical components needed for development hence, the need for media professionals to step up efforts in the areas of creating awareness of the citizens especially on the implications of tax evasion.
He added that there was need for more sensitization to citizens on the different levels of tax payments which is sometimes misunderstood as multiple taxation.
Mallam Shehu Muhammed added that when Journalists are properly informed about the types of tax and agencies responsible for collection as well as terminologies associated with taxation, the public can be better informed.
Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists, Nasarawa State Council, Mallam Salihu Alkali stressed the need for the Federal Inland Revenue Service to entrench enduring collaboration with the media for optimal tax administration.
