The Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Shehu Buba Umar, has formally submitted himself to Nigeria’s primary security and intelligence agencies for investigation following persistent allegations linking him to banditry, terrorism financing, and kidnapping.
Speaking at a press conference in Bauchi State, Senator Umar declared that he had voluntarily approached the Department of State Services (DSS), the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Nigeria Police Force to clear his name.
The lawmaker, who previously served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, stated that his legitimate, sensitive engagements with military and intelligence services are being deliberately distorted and weaponised by political opponents to tarnish his reputation.
Senator Buba noted that he is not seeking immunity or special protection, expressing his willingness to cooperate fully with investigators to allow facts to speak for themselves.
He revealed that his legal team, led by former Nigerian Bar Association President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN, has already supplied security agencies and the Minister of Defence with copies of his documentation.
According to him, the documents include his September 2025 petition to the police, ongoing criminal court filings in Abuja, and a recent request for Interpol intervention against a suspect, Hassan Saleh Hussaini, who is reportedly operating from Niger Republic.
The Senator tied the escalating smear campaign directly to his political ambitions, pointing to his confirmed status as the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) governorship candidate for the 2027 Bauchi State election.
He cautioned against using grave allegations of terrorism as tools for political destruction, urging aspirants instead to debate developmental issues like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and job creation.
Buba concluded by calling on his supporters to remain calm and peaceful, while challenging his accusers to present any credible evidence directly to the security services
