The Sustainable Development Goals Project Support Unit (SDGs-PSU), Plateau State, has launched the pilot phase of its elderly care programme, tagged “Dignity in Sunset,” in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the Northern Senatorial Zone.
The initiative, aimed at improving the welfare, health and dignity of elderly citizens, will be implemented across the three senatorial zones of the state in line with the “Leave No One Behind” principle.
The State Project Coordinator, Mrs. Nanbam Danjuma-Lot, said the programme reflects Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly, who deserve dignity and care after years of service to society.
Danjuma-Lot said the SDGs-PSU, in complementing government efforts, had continued to create awareness among Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as the general public, on the need to advance sustainable development and ensure that no category of citizens is left behind.
She linked the intervention to SDG 1, No Poverty; SDG 3, Good Health and Well-being; SDG 10, Reduced Inequalities; and SDG 17, Partnerships for the Goals.
The Coordinator disclosed that the intervention comprises comprehensive welfare packages and free eye-care services, including eye screening, medication and the provision of eyeglasses, as well as other supportive services designed to improve the well-being of beneficiaries.
She urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the support provided and called on families to show greater care, love and respect for the elderly.
The Chairman of Barkin Ladi Local Government Council, Hon. Stephen Gyang Pwajok, commended the SDGs-PSU and the “Time is Now” administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang for the initiative.
Pwajok expressed appreciation for the attention being given to elderly citizens and described the intervention as a demonstration of concern for vulnerable members of society.
Traditional leaders, including the Da Gwom Rwei of Barkin Ladi, represented by the Gwom Gwol, Da Chollom Gyang, also commended the intervention.
Da Chollom conveyed the council’s appreciation for the programme and praised the SDGs-PSU for identifying with elderly citizens, particularly those who require special attention and support.
The launch attracted local government officials, legislators, traditional leaders and health workers, among other stakeholders.
