Following the Labour Party (LP) crisis at the national level between Barr. Julius Abure leadership and Senator
Esther Nenadi Usman led interim chairmanship of the party, the LP in Nasarawa State has been divided between the chairman of the party, Mr Alexander Umbugu and Comrade Asoloko Maku , said to be the interim Chairman of the party in the State.
Speaking on the development to Journalist in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital on Sunday, the Chairman of the Nasarawa State Chairman of the Labour Party, Alexander Ombugu called for a collective efforts of stakeholders of the party in order to proffer solutions to the internal disputes within the party.
The State Labour Party Chairman said the ongoing rumours of his suspension I are untrue and are fabricated by mischief makers to lower the chances of the party capitalizing on the gains of 2023 general election in State to win in all positions in 2027.
He however extended his hands of fellowship to all camps within the Labour Party in the state, stating that the continuous disagreements between members and supporters of the party in the state has a possibility of affecting the chances of the party negatively during the forthcoming primary elections and the 2027 general elections.
Ombugu, who said that his chairmanship of the party in the State has the full backing of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the responsibility of uniting the party ahead of the 2027 general elections falls directly on his desk alongside the other executives, the reason he is calling for peace and harmony among members and supporters of the party.
“The Labour Party in Nasarawa State has always been united. Even now, we are still very much united, but I observed that recently, some group of persons within the party decided to be doing things differently from what we are doing. They don’t collaborate with other members of the party including myself.
“So, I feel that it is important for me to extend my hands of fellowship to all LP members and supporters in the state who may be aggrieved for one reason or the other.
According to Umbugu, he is ready to discuss extensively with any leader, stakeholder or group in the party to enable then resolve all outstanding issues before the 2027 political activities fully kicks off.
The chairman reiterated that in line with the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, the electoral act and the Labour Party’s constitution, the wards, local government and the states congresses were peacefully conducted in December 2025, emphasising that the processes were duly monitored by the electoral umpire and the security agencies.
He urged members and supporters of the party in Nasarawa state not to allow the legal tussle among leaders of the party at the national level to discouraged them from continuing to believe in the party and its leadership.
He further expressed optimism that despite the current challenges of the party, the Labour Party, will emerged victorious at all levels in 2027.
