The Plateau State Police Command has recorded a series of major operational breakthroughs, including the arrest of several suspects linked to rape, defilement, homicide, illegal arms possession, and cult-related violence across the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, disclosed this during a press briefing on Friday at the Command Headquarters in Jos, where he also raised alarm over what he described as a “disturbing epidemic” of sexual offences involving minors.
Wave of Sexual Offences Raises Concern
Top among the cases highlighted was the arrest of an 18-year-old suspect accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a one-year-old girl in Pankshin. Police investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly exploited the absence of the child’s mother to commit the act, with medical examinations confirming severe injuries consistent with sexual abuse.
In a separate case, a 19-year-old suspect was arrested in Jos North for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl multiple times and threatening her into silence. The police said the suspect confessed to the crime and will face prosecution upon conclusion of investigations.
Similarly, a 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly engaging in incest and defilement of his niece over several years. Investigators also uncovered the involvement of two additional suspects in the abuse.
Other cases include the arrest of a 43-year-old man in Langtang South for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl, as well as the arrest of a female suspect and her accomplice over assault, grievous harm, and sexual harassment involving a teenage victim.
Homicide, Arms Recovery, and Cult Activities
The Command also reported progress in investigating a mob killing near the University of Jos, where suspects were tracked and arrested after the victim’s phone was recovered and traced.
In another operation, police arrested a suspect in Barkin Ladi found in possession of three locally fabricated AK-47 rifles and empty magazines. The suspect reportedly confessed to dealing in illegal firearms and supplying weapons to buyers for profit.
Additionally, a 31-year-old man was apprehended in Jos with a locally made pistol, ammunition, and a human skull, raising suspicions of possible criminal or ritual activities.
Police operatives also arrested multiple suspects linked to cult violence in Jos North, where rival groups reportedly attacked residents with dangerous weapons, leaving at least one person injured.
Crackdown on Bandit Support Networks
In Wase Local Government Area, two suspects were arrested for allegedly supplying cash and materials to bandits operating in remote communities. Items recovered include cash, recharge cards, cigarettes, and drug-related materials.
Police Reject “Out-of-Court Settlements” for Rape
CP Ewah strongly condemned attempts by some individuals, including community and religious leaders, to interfere in rape and defilement cases by seeking informal settlements.
“Rape and defilement are not family matters; they are criminal offences against the state,” he said, warning that anyone attempting to shield offenders would be treated as an accessory and prosecuted.
He directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to ensure that all such cases are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted without compromise.
Call for Vigilance
The Police Commissioner urged parents and guardians to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity promptly, reiterating the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring justice.
“Plateau State will not be a safe haven for criminals,” he added.
Investigations into the various cases are ongoing, with all suspects expected to be charged to court upon completion.
