The Plateau State Police Command has announced a significant operational breakthroughs across the state, lineup activities to mark the 2026 National Police Day celebration.
Addressing journalists on Saturday at the Command Headquarters in Jos, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah, said the week-long celebration, themed “Community Partnership: Building Trust,” will commence on March 30 and run through April 7, 2026, with a grand finale scheduled to hold at the Eagle Square in Abuja.
According to the police boss, the theme underscores the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and the public in tackling crime and enhancing security.
He noted that activities lined up for the celebration include sanitation exercises at Terminus Market, a medical outreach and walkathon, road safety sensitization, and presentation of cheques to families of fallen officers. The events will conclude with thanksgiving prayers and church services.
CP Ewah called on the Plateau State Government, community and religious leaders, as well as residents, to actively participate in the celebration, stressing that effective policing thrives on trust and cooperation.
Crime Crackdown and Arrests
The Commissioner also used the briefing to reel out a series of arrests and recoveries made by the Command in recent weeks.
He disclosed that police operatives arrested a suspect, Nanbut Hosea, in connection with an armed robbery incident in Shendam Local Government Area, where a victim was dispossessed of a motorcycle, livestock, food items, and cash. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend his accomplice who remains at large.
In another operation, three suspects were arrested for criminal conspiracy and illegal possession of firearms, with police recovering three AK-47 rifles, magazines, and live ammunition. One of the suspects reportedly confessed to owning the weapons.
Similarly, a suspect was apprehended in Bokkos LGA with a revolver and live cartridges, while another individual was arrested in Jos over illegal possession of a locally fabricated firearm.
The Command also recorded successes in its anti-kidnapping operations, with the arrest of two suspects linked to the abduction of a job applicant, as well as the capture of a suspected kidnap kingpin in Bassa LGA.
Cases of Sexual Offences and Human Trafficking
CP Ewah further revealed the arrest of several suspects involved in sexual offences, including alleged rape and abuse of minors in different parts of the state. He said the cases are currently under investigation and will be prosecuted accordingly.
In addition, a female suspect was arrested for alleged human trafficking after reportedly deceiving two young women with promises of mining jobs abroad, only for them to be forced into commercial sex work.
Assurance of Safety
The police chief reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
“Security is a collective responsibility. We urge citizens to remain vigilant and partner with the police. If you see something, say something,” he stated.
The Plateau State Police Command reiterated its resolve to sustain ongoing efforts aimed at curbing criminal activities and ensuring peace across the state.
