Lagos Pensioners Say 57-Month Arrears Still Unpaid, Urge Government to Act

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Lagos State Council, has said that the Lagos State Government is yet to settle 57 months of pension arrears linked to the 2019 consequential adjustment.

The Chairman of the union in the state, Olufemi Olarenwaju, disclosed this in a press release issued on Thursday in Lagos while reacting to a statement attributed to the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu that no pensioner in the state is being owed.

Olarenwaju explained that the state government has also not cleared 12 months of arrears related to the 20 percent and 28 percent pension increase resulting from the review of pension rates.

He further stated that the implementation of the ₦32,000 pension increment for Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) retirees, arising from the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, has not been carried out by the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC).

According to him, pensioners under the contributory pension scheme are also yet to benefit from the approved pension increase, three months after the template was submitted to Governor Sanwo-Olu.

The NUP chairman also lamented that over a thousand retirees who completed documentation in the past two years are still waiting to receive their terminal benefits from LASPEC.

He added that retirees of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) have not received their terminal benefits for the past three years.

While commending Governor Sanwo-Olu for efforts made in clearing some pension liabilities, Olarenwaju urged the state government to address the welfare of pensioners more decisively and ensure that all outstanding entitlements are paid promptly.
