Prof. Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Matthew Hassan-Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese are billed as guest lecturers at the 30th anniversary of the creation of Nasarawa State.
Dr Emmanuel Akabe, Deputy Gov. of the state and Chairman of the anniversary planning committee stated this at a press conference to announce the lineup of activities for the celebration on Thursday in Lafia.
The Deputy Gov. said that Jega would talk on ‘Nasarawa State at 30: from foundation to transformation’, while Kukah would talk on ‘unity in diversity: Three decades of building a cohesive Nasarawa State – Issues, challenges and prospects’.
He explained that the state was created on October 1st 1996 by the late General Sani Abacha’s administration.
Akabe noted that the lecture is part of activities lined up to celebrate the state’s journey from a rural outpost carved out of the old Plateau State to what it is today.
He added that the anniversary would provide an opportunity to honour those who contributed to its development, appreciate achievements recorded and challenges being faced and renew commitment to building a more united, peaceful and prosperous state.
“The anniversary is about celebrating our diverse cultures, resilience and shared identity as well as acknowledging the contributions of founding fathers, past and present governors, public servants, traditional rulers among others.
“It will provide a platform for reflection on the progress recorded by successive administrations in critical sectors including, education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, human capital development, security and others,” Akabe added.
He further explained that there would be Jumma’at prayers at Old Secretariat Mosque, an inter-denominational church service at the St. Williams Catholic Cathedral on Sunday, inauguration of projects at various Local Government Areas among others. (NAN).
