Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a new socio-political group, Nigeria Forward (NF), has urged political stakeholders in Northern Nigeria to respect the country’s informal North-South power rotation agreement and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term.
The call was made during the formal unveiling of the group at the Barcelona Hotel in Abuja.
Addressing attendees, NF Co-Convener and Kano State Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, stated that the North-South power-shifting arrangement has been crucial in maintaining national unity and even development since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
Waiya warned that reclaiming the presidency for the North after only four years would undermine this stability and risk reviving sectional tensions.
“Allowing Tinubu to complete the eight years would provide political continuity and give his government time to consolidate its policies, programmes, and projects initiated for the overall progress and development of Nigeria,” Waiya said.
He urged Northern politicians to prioritize long-term national balance over immediate electoral gains.
He also noted that the current administration inherited deep-rooted economic and security challenges in 2023 but has since introduced critical reforms, citing local government autonomy and steps toward establishing state police structures.
The group clarified that Nigeria Forward is not affiliated with any single political party but operates as an independent platform for bottom-up citizen engagement.
Waiya emphasized that Northern Nigeria’s developmental hurdles, including poverty, cannot be solved by presidential politics alone, calling for collaborative efforts across state and local government levels.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology and NF Co-Convener, Dr Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, stated that the movement aims to bridge the communication gap between the federal government and citizens.
Udeh highlighted that current federal reforms are designed to transition the country from infrastructure development to production and job creation.
He urged citizens to evaluate government projects based on their practical economic impacts—such as roads connecting farmers to markets—rather than political slogans.
The group closed the unveiling by rallying members to promote inclusivity, evidence-based assessment, and national unity under their core mantra, “Together We Move Nigeria Forward.”
