The Nasarawa State Government has set up a team to commence a statewide inspection of mining sites to check for violations of environmental laws and ensure compliance.
Princess Margaret Elayo, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, announce this at a press conference on Friday in Lafia.
She explained that the decision followed the reports and complaints about environmental degradation caused by mining activities in different communities of the state.
The commissioner said that it is important to strengthen environmental protection in the state and ensure environmentally friendly practices in mining sites.
“Our state is blessed with rich mineral deposits that have contributed significantly to our economy, but we have also observed increasing environmental challenges linked to unregulated and unsafe mining operations.
“However, the government recognises the growing environmental challenges arising from unregulated mining activities, including erosion, deforestation, water pollution, and the loss of farmlands.
“In response, the state government, through our ministry, is taking decisive steps to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices,” she added.
Elayo said that the government would strengthen collaboration with security agencies, miners, traditional institutions, and host communities to ensure that mining activities are conducted in line with approved environmental standards.
“This initiative is designed not to intimidate or punish, but to guide operators and ensure compliance with best environmental practices.
“We therefore call on all miners and community leaders to cooperate with government teams, adopt eco-friendly methods, and contribute to the restoration of degraded lands and the protection of water sources.
She said that the true wealth of the state lies not only in the minerals beneath the ground but in the well-being of our people and the preservation of the environment.
“Together, we can build a state where economic development and environmental protection advance hand in hand. (NAN).
