Agriculture: Expert Calls for Soil Laboratories in All Plateau LGAs

Engineer Habakkuk Satmak

An agricultural expert, Engineer Habakkuk Satmak, has called for the establishment of soil laboratories across all 17 local government areas of Plateau State to enhance farming productivity.

Speaking at the Agricultural Sanitation Conference 2025, held at the Legislative Chamber of Kanke Local Government Council in Kwall, Plateau State, Satmak emphasized the need for scientific soil analysis to improve fertilizer application and overall crop yield.

“It will add immense value to farmers if the government establishes soil laboratories and engages agricultural scientists to manage them,” he stated. “Many farmers apply fertilizers without understanding the nature of their soil, which affects productivity. With soil laboratories closer to them, they can make informed decisions on soil health and fertilizer use.”

The one-day conference, organized by the Genshakka Emmanuel Foundation, brought together key stakeholders to raise awareness and build farmers’ capacity for improved agricultural practices.

Satmak also urged the government to shift towards soil- and crop-specific fertilizers, stating that “providing fertilizers tailored to the specific needs of different soil types will significantly boost agricultural output.”

Additionally, he called for investment in modern farming equipment, particularly solar-powered irrigation pumps, which he described as “more economical and sustainable compared to fuel-powered alternatives.”

He further emphasized the need for continuous training and retraining of farmers, stating that “empowering farmers with modern techniques will enhance productivity and ensure food security.”
