Nasarawa: VP. Shettima to distribute relief materials to 1,845 flood victims

The Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima will on Friday distribute relief materials to 1,845 2024 flood victims and inaugurate projects in Nasarawa State.

Nasarawa State Government disclosed this at a joint press briefing on Thursday in Lafia.

Princess Margaret Elayo, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Humanitarian, Social Services and Non Governmental Organisations said that the Vice President would perform the distribution of relief materials to 1,845 2024 flood victims during his visit.

Elayo said that over 2,000 households were affected by the 2024 flood in Nasarawa State, which resulted in the displacement of people due to the natural disaster.

“You may recall that sometime last year, we had a flood crisis in Nasarawa state, the Governor immediately sent his foot soldiers for assessment to ascertain the number and safety of individuals that were affected.

She said the state Government under the leadership of Gov Abdullahi Sule had earlier distributed relief materials to cushion the hardship being experienced by the victims.

Elayo said that the federal government had earlier last year graciously given Nasarawa state the sum of N3 billion under the ecological fund to fix the bad roads, drainage system and bridges to mitigate future flooding.

“Now that we have generated the list and the number of people who were affected, we have prepared packages for them ranging from food items, non-food items, building materials like zincs, bags cement mattresses, mats, buckets among others,’ she said.

Dr Daniel Ewuga, Executive Secretary, Wing Commander Ibrahim Abdullahi, Vocational and Technology Institute said during the visit, the Vice President would grace the graduation of 1,128 from the Institute.

“These 1,128 graduates who came from different states were trained last year, 2024 in the third and fourth quarters of 2024 in forty different contemporary and marketable occupational trade areas that are highly sought after in the labour market.

He explained that the 1,128 were trained in welding and fabrication, automobile engineering, ICT, Costumetologist, tailoring, fashion design, Plaster of Paris (POP) amongst others.

said the VP would perform the distribution of 200 bags of paddy rice to each of the 13 Local Government to key into the food security of the state government.

Explained that the 2, 600 bags were parts of the harvest of the 10 thousand hectares of land cultivated in line with President Bola Tinubu’s food security agenda.

He also said that the Vice President would perform the distribution of 26 tractors to the 13 Local Government Areas of the state to boost agriculture production.

Also speaking, Ibrahim Abdullahi, Managing Director, Nasarawa State Investment Development Agency (NASIDA) said the VP would perform the groundbreaking of the One Stop Investment Centre during his visit to the state.

He said the Investment Centre was significant because it would House the Headquarters of NASIDA and coordinate the economic activities and investment promotion initiatives, driving in and arm holding investments and investors in Nasarawa State.

“Another significant of the project is the multi-door courthouse to provide a conducive environment and avenue for businesses to explore alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in their commercial dealings, this will complement the already established small claim courts,” he said. (NAN)
