The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Project Coordinator in Plateau State, Mrs. Nanbam Danjuma-Lot has joined the global community in commemorating the 2024 United Nations Day.
Statement Mathias Yengoet, the Information officer of the project, said while commemorating the day, the project coordinator said it is important to reflect on the significance of day and its alignment with their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda.
She said they have made significant strides toward the realization of the SDGs under the visionary leadership of his Excellency, Gov. Caleb Mutfwang as his administration has prioritized sustainable development, through initiatives that address poverty, hunger, quality education, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and strong institutions for peace and justice.
The statement added that the “Time is Now” administration has continued to partner with the United Nations and other international agencies to implement projects that promote climate resilience, economic empowerment, and social development across the state.
“We recognize that climate change remains one of the greatest threats to humanity. The State Government, in collaboration with various stakeholders, is intensifying efforts to combat environmental degradation through afforestation programs, sustainable agricultural practices, and climate-smart infrastructure. These initiatives align with SDG 13 (Climate Action) and reflect our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future for Plateau State.
“Furthermore, the promotion of human rights, gender equality, and social justice is at the heart of our development agenda. We are working tirelessly to ensure that all people, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or background, have equal access to opportunities and resources.
“We are advancing SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) fostering inclusivity, peace building, and the protection of human rights in our communities. These efforts are crucial for building a harmonious and equitable society where every citizen can thrive.” The statement added.
She said the United Nations Day serves as a reminder of shared responsibility to create a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world and that this year, they are particularly mindful of the growing challenges posed climate change, environmental degradation, and the urgent need for action to safeguard our planet for future generations.
“As we celebrate this United Nations Day, I call on all the people of Plateau State to embrace actionable attitudes that foster sustainable change. We must recognize that true development can only be achieved when we all take responsibility for our actions—whether it be through conserving the environment, supporting gender equality, advocating for social justice, or promoting peace. Our individual and collective actions are essential in driving the transformative change that the SDGs represent.”
Mrs. Nanbam added that the task before them is urgent, but with dedication and collaboration, they can build a Plateau State that not only achieves the SDGs but also sets an example of sustainable development for Nigeria and beyond.
