‘… as government calls for calm and enhanced security measures…’

A two hundred level computer science student of Plateau State University, PLASU, Bokkos, is among the people killed by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia in an attacked on a community near the Institution.
The persistent attacks on Communities around the University and some rural communities in the local government has led to protest on Friday following the night attack.
Statement by the Institution’s Registrar Yakubu Ayuba, said “the sad event led to the lost of a 200 level, computer science student of the University residing in Chikam, by name Dading James Jordan.
“This is coming despite the relentless effort by the Plateau State government, security agencies, the Management of the University and other stakeholders at improving the security situation on our campus and the surrounding communities.”
The statement added that, the Vice-Chancellor and the entire Management convey their condolences to the family of the deceased, the student body and the university community.

Meanwhile, the Management of the Institution had suspended the examination earlier scheduled for Friday 19th and Saturday 20th, and declared a two-day mourning period for Friday 19” and Saturday 20th April, 2024.
The statement called for calm among the students, urging them to be law abiding and appealed to security agencies to beef up security around the university in order to secure staff and students.
Also, the Plateau State Government through the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Plateau State Governor, Gyang Bere has condemned the attack and reassured citizens, particularly students of the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding their lives and properties.
The statement by Gyang Bere said Governor Caleb Mutfwang urged them to remain composed in the face of the tragedy, as government is determined to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the heinous act.
While commending the swift response of the security agencies, the Governor stressed the need for community vigilance and cooperation to combat criminal activities and bring perpetrators and their accomplices to justice.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased student and all those affected by the incident, praying for the swift recovery of the injured.

The Plateau State Commissioner of Police CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, had paid an on the spot assessment in the area where he expressed his condolence to the families of the deceased and the good people of Plateau State as a whole.
The Command Spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo said the CP has also deployed additional Policemen to the area to stop future reoccurrence of such an ugly incidence.
As at the time of filling this report the number of casualties was yet to be ascertain. However, the Police spokesperson reported that 2 people were killed while 3 others sustained injuries. But reports from the locals are contrary to that of the police.
