Insecurity: Journalists Charged to Promote Peace

The role of journalists in promoting freedom of Religious belief cannot be over emphasized as the media serves as a powerful tool for shaping public opinion, influencing policies and fostering understanding among diverse beliefs and communities.

In a 3- day intensive training organized for journalists in Kaduna and Plateau States respectively by Search For Common Ground (SEARCH) Nigeria, a Non- Governmental organization in collaboration with the Federation of Muslims Women Association in Nigeria(FOMWAN) and Center for Dialogue, Reconciliation, and Peace (DREP). These bodies together are implementing a project tagged “ Inclusive Religion Engagement Enhanced by Women and Youth (I-RENEW) supported by the European Union (EU).

They recently funded the training of journalists on Common Ground Approach to Journalism in Relation to Freedom of Religion and Belief.

According to Temisan Etiesola a national media specialist and one of the resource persons, the media plays a pivotal role in promoting and safeguarding Freedom of religion and beliefs by raising awareness and advocacy through media platforms such as print, broadcast, and the digital media.

Temisan added that reporting on issues such as awareness on religious discrimination, persecution and human rights violations can act as a catalyst for advocacy and change.

He reiterates that the media can serve as a bridge of understanding between different faiths and belief system through writing and programs that explore various religions and philosophies, this he said can foster religious tolerance.

Journalists according to the resources person can create platforms for dialogue, allowing religious leaders and adherents to share their perspectives and promote mutual respect. Countering misinformation and stereotypes about different religions and belief is key to changing the narratives and contributing to a more accurate understanding. This, in turn will reduce the risk of hate crimes and discrimination.

A free and independent media is essential for protecting freedom of expression, a fundamental component of religious freedom. This helps to foster freedom of religion and beliefs, however sensationalism, bias and the potential for promoting divisive narratives can hinder its positive impact. Therefore, media outlets have a significant responsibility to maintain objectivity fact-checking and fairness in reporting.

Media wields enormous influence in our modern world hence its role in fostering freedom of religion and beliefs is critical,he said.

Other resources persons includes Alfred Mangai, SEARCH media person, who spoke on the role of media in conflict transformation among other topics.
