A group under the aegis, Akwanga Youth Vanguard (AYV) has condemned the allege arrest of two supporters of David Ombugadu, Nasarawa State candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the 2023 gubernatorial election.
This is contained in a statement signed by Muss Sule-Akwanga, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the group and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Lafia.
According to the PRO the two supporters of PDP who are all staff of Kini Country Home and Resort in Akwanga, were arrested for expressing their support to the victory of Ombugadu at the governorship elections petition tribunal on Oct. 2.
“It has come to the attention of AYV that two staff of Kini Country Home and Resort were arrested on wednesday Oct. 18 for celebrating the victory of Ombugadu at the tribunal.
“The arrest is a violation of their fundamental human rights and we demand their release without further delay.
“Freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democracy, it is the right of every citizen to express their political preferences and opinions without fear of persecution or reprisals.
“The arrest of these individuals for exercising their democratic rights is not only unjust but also an affront to the democratic values that we hold dear and are propagating as members of the society,” he added.
He said that it is the duty of the government to protect the rights of its citizens, including their right to express political opinions freely and without fear of intimidation.
