SWS calls for justice, condemns domestic violence in Jos

State Chairperson of SWS, Grace Gora

The Plateau State Chapter of Stand up for Women Societies (SWS) expressed sadness over  the recent violent attack on a woman in Dong Area, Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau state, by her husband which led him to cut off her hand, from the wrist.

Report has it that the incident happened when the husband was expressing his anger, over an argument concerning money amounting to the sum of N20,000, which he allegedly kept with her.

In a statement issued to newsmen by SWS State Chairperson, Grace Gora said reports from various media outfits indicated that the man is a Police Inspector, whose name is yet to be officially named, and the wife, who survived the attack is receiving treatment in a hospital.

“SWS does not only condemn this act in totality, but views it as wicked, barbaric and one of the sad incidences of Gender Based Violence (GBV) which affects women, girls and vulnerable groups in Nigeria.

“It is of concern to us that the crime was allegedly perpetrated by a Police Officer, who is ordinarily supposed to be at the forefront of protecting his family, citizens of the state, and country at large from such vicious acts.

“We are however glad that the man has already been arrested by the appropriate authorities. We therefore wish to lend our voice to call on the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, (CP), Emmanuel Olugbemiga Asesina, and other stakeholders  to ensure speedy dispensation of justice for the poor woman, who  is now affected with a  physical disability, as a result of his actions.”
