Nasarawa: Coalition begs Judiciary for Justice in Gov’ship appeal

A coalition of youth groups in Nasarawa state has called on the judiciary to remain upright and stand on the side of justice at all times to enhance peace, growth, and sustenance of the nation’s democratic governance.

The group known as Nasarawa State Youth Coalition was speaking ahead of the Supreme Court judgment on the appeal filed by the PDP Governorship Candidate in Nasarawa State Dr Emmanuel Ombugadu against the APC candidate Alhaji Abdullahi Sule.

Spokesperson for the group, Mr Iliya Ashokpa Auna made the call during a news briefing in Lafia the Nasarawa State capital.

Mr Auna stated that the recent landmark judgment delivered by the Supreme Court affirming the elections of Governors in seven states was a clear indication that the judiciary was prepared to allow the wishes of the people in election matters to prevail.

He called on the justices assigned to decide on the appeal brought before the Supreme Court to deliver judgment on the winner of the 2023 Governorship Election in Nasarawa State to be fair, and just and allow merit to take precedence in handling the matter.

“While the majority of the electorates believed in Dr. David Emmanuel Ombugadu and voted for him overwhelmingly which was further affirmed by the Election Petition Tribunal, the APC Candidate Alhaji Abdullahi Sule was declared winner which led to widespread peaceful protests across the state.

We stand before the Supreme Court, the final arbiter, that will restore hope in democracy nationally and in the minds of the masses of Nasarawa State to do the needful in delivering its judgment,” Mr.Auna said.

The Spokesperson for the youth groups comprising different ethnic, religious, and political affiliations across the 13 Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State appealed to the justices of the Supreme Court to remain steadfast and resist any form of inducement to sway them away from the law.

“Our mothers and wives have been protesting for months to demand security in their farms and homes. Despite derogatory names thrown at them, we believe their legitimate concerns will be addressed. We stand united in our belief that justice will prevail, and that the true will of the people is upheld in tune with the renewed hope mantra of Mr. President,” Mr Auna emphasized.

Mr.Auna however, called on residents of Nasarawa State to remain hopeful and be committed to prayers for justice and peace to prevail.
