NONIRHA to Follow up Plateau Youth Leader’s Death Case

Northern Nigeria Human Rights Advocates, a coalition of Human Rights Advocates in Northern Nigeria has condemned what they term as an Arbitrary arrest, detention and tortured to death of a Youth Leader in Plateau State.

In a statement by coordinator of the group, Mr. Sylvester Yibis, said NONIRHA legal teams are following up with the case to ensure administration of speedy justice on the case. 

The statement noted that the youth leader, Mr. Audu Bako Gada, the youth leader of Jengre Community in Bassa Local Government Area of plateau state was reportedly died after he was tortured while in detention by all Operation Safe Heaven Jos Plateau State. 

“Operation Safe Haven is the military task force set up to maintain peace in Plateau State. The force has its operational command in Jos. The multi task force is in charge of security of lives and properties in Plateau, Bauchi and parts of southern Kaduna.

“About a month ago, Audu was returning home in the night on his bike when the vigilante stopped him at the bend leading to his house just before the checkpoint at a place called Road-Block.

“The incident led to a serious fight between him and the vigilante to the extent the case went to the Jengre Police Division, the vigilante had succeeded in beating him up with bamboo sticks. It was at the DPO’s office in Jengre that the STF insisted that Audu must be taken to Jos for further scrutiny.

“Audu did not return to Jengre until, after 10 days (01/05/2023), he was in detention and was tortured, as he was accused of engaging in a fight with vigilantes at odd hours. Upon his discharge from Jos, he returned home sick he had to be admitted at SDA Hospital, Jengre and later referred to JUTH for further treatment as his case was worsening and died in JUTH as a result of the torture.

“The security action went against their rules of engagement and violated his fundamental human rights, therefore,

NONIRHA is calling the attention of the Special Task Force Commandant to investigate and probe the STF sector 1 Commander to ensure justice is prevail for Audu” the statement read. 

Similarly, NONIRHA has also condemned the attacked on Villages in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulting to lost of lives and property.

While calling on the security agents to ensure the perpetrators of the heinous crime are arrested and brought to book, NONIRHA also commiserated with the victims and their families.
