JMDB Threatens ₦500,000 Fine Over Unauthorised Political Posters in Jos

The Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) has warned political parties, candidates and campaign organisations that they risk a ₦500,000 fine for unauthorised posting or pasting of political campaign posters on public infrastructure within the Jos metropolis.

The Board said the sanction is provided under Plateau State Executive Order No. 003 of 2024 on the Control of Buildings and Vehicular Traffic in the state.

JMDB, in a public notice signed by its General Manager, Arc. Hart Bankat, said the enforcement would apply during the 2026–2027 election campaign period.

The Board said the measure was aimed at regulating political outdoor advertising and ensuring the orderly use of public spaces within its jurisdiction.

According to the notice, political posters, banners and other campaign materials must not be pasted, mounted or displayed on public buildings, bridges, road infrastructure, utility poles, traffic structures, street furniture, trees or other unauthorised locations.

JMDB further warned that no political poster, banner, billboard, signage, branded structure or other outdoor campaign advertising medium should be erected, installed or displayed without prior approval from the appropriate regulatory authority.

It said all proposed advertising locations must be duly assessed and approved, with the applicable permit obtained before any campaign material is deployed.

The Board stressed that only approved and allocated advertising locations may be used for political campaign advertisements within the metropolis.

It therefore directed political parties, candidates, campaign organisations, advertising practitioners and individuals to obtain the necessary approval before displaying outdoor campaign materials.

JMDB said violations of the regulations would attract enforcement action and applicable sanctions in accordance with Executive Order No. 003 of 2024 and other relevant laws and regulations.

The Board explained that strict compliance was essential to preserving the aesthetics of Jos, protecting public infrastructure and ensuring public safety.

It added that the regulations were also intended to promote an orderly and equitable campaign environment for all political parties and candidates participating in the election period.

JMDB said it had notified the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), Plateau State Office, and other relevant stakeholders of the enforcement of regulations governing political campaign advertisements.

The Board called on ARCON, registered political parties, candidates, advertising practitioners and campaign organisations to sensitise their members, agents and affiliates on the requirements.

JMDB further stated that it would continue to monitor political outdoor advertising activities within its jurisdiction and take appropriate enforcement action against anyone found violating the regulations.
