The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Plateau State Chapter, has called for the immediate passage of the Special Seats Bill (HB1349), currently before the National Assembly of Nigeria.
In a press statement issued on Monday by Grace Akwe Gotip, Chairperson and Mwuesse Adem, Secretary, the association said it fully aligns with the position of its national leadership in advocating the swift consideration and approval of the proposed legislation.
According to NAWOJ, the continued underrepresentation of women in Nigeria’s legislative chambers constitutes a significant democratic gap that must be urgently addressed.
The group stressed that inclusive governance is not a privilege for women but a constitutional and developmental necessity for national progress.
The association described the Special Seats Bill as a corrective measure aimed at addressing historical imbalances and strengthening democratic institutions.
“The Bill is not about privilege; it is about justice and fairness. It is about correcting longstanding inequalities and building a more inclusive democracy,” the statement noted.
NAWOJ Plateau urged all Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members representing Plateau State at the National Assembly to set aside partisan interests and support the Bill without delay or dilution. It also called on members of the Plateau State House of Assembly to publicly back national efforts to enhance women’s political representation across the country.
As part of its advocacy efforts, the chapter disclosed plans to engage key stakeholders and lawmakers within the state, organise media campaigns to educate the public on the importance of the Bill, and collaborate with women’s groups, civil society organisations, and community leaders to amplify the campaign.
The association vowed to sustain public engagement until meaningful legislative action is achieved, describing the moment as critical to the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
“A vote for the Special Seats Bill is a vote for equity, inclusive governance, and a stronger Nigeria,” the statement added.
