In a remarkable recognition of his decades-long impactful medical practice,, Hon. Dr. Joseph Haruna Kigbu is set to receive the Distinguished Obstetrics and Gynaecological ICON service Award at the 4th Congress and Scientific Conference of the West African College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (WACOG) in Abuja on 5th September, 2025.
The prestigious list of awardees, recently published in the Punch Newspaper of 2nd September, 2025 was officially signed by the eminent Emeritus Professor J. Brian-D. Adinma.
This International recognition is a dual celebration of Dr. Kigbu’s leadership and medical excellence. Beyond being honoured for his tireless work as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist—a career that earned him the name “Likitan Talakawa,” or “Doctor for the Poor”—Dr. Kigbu is also serving as the Local Organizing Chairman for the landmark conference.
This leadership role places him at the forefront of shaping this critical gathering of West Africa’s top medical minds.
The award ceremony is a significant moment for Nasarawa State, celebrating its contributions to healthcare on a West African stage.
The conference will also posthumously honour another prominent son of Nasarawa state, The Very Dr. Dalhatu Araf, for his distinguished maternal health services.
Additionally, His Excellency, Engr. A.A Sule, the Governor of Nasarawa State, will be celebrated with the Excellent Health Performance Award for his administration’s laudable policy of providing free antenatal services.
Dr. Kigbu’s receipt of this International high honour, alongside his central role in organizing the event, serves as powerful proof that his influence and impact extend far beyond the political arena.
It reinforces his status as a nationally and internationally respected professional whose life’s work is dedicated to the well-being of others.
