A group under the aegis of Concerned Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State has rejected the purported adoption of a governorship candidate of the party in the state ahead of the 2027 election.
Mr Jibrin Ibrahim, spokesperson of the group, stated this at a press conference.
The PDP conference is on Tuesday in Lafia.
According to him, on behalf of the elders, youths and women of the party from the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state, taking such a decision now threatens the principle of internal democracy and the unity of the party.
He said that it has come to their attention that a few self-serving individuals sat somewhere in Lafia and had adopted a consensus governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
“This so-called adoption is undemocratic and does not reflect the will of the majority of the party members across the state.
“We reject it in totality because this charade and manipulation will undermine the party and cause further problems for us,” he added.
He noted that the party was founded on the ideals of democracy, inclusiveness, and fairness.
He added that the processes for the emergence of candidates must be transparent and credible, by the constitution of the party.
They therefore urged all aspirants seeking election in the party to go about their consultation as they await the primary election.
Reacting to the matter, Adamu Ninga, State Chairman of PDP said that the party was not aware of this issue as it had not endorsed any candidate for the 2027 election.
The PDP Chairman said that it is not yet time for the party to talk and would speak at the most appropriate time.
Also, Francis Orogu, the immediate past state Chairman of the party and North-Central Zonal Secretary of the party, said that the party had not adopted anybody as its consensus governorship candidate.
He, however, explained that the elders of the party in Nasarawa South Senatorial District met and had adopted David Ombugadu, candidate of the party in 2019 and 2023, as their consensus candidate for the next election.
“It is their right to adopt a candidate, and anyone who does not agree can adopt their candidate,” Orogu added. (NAN).
