A leading entrepreneur in Nasarawa State, Dr. Vincent Paul, has called on the federal government to implement policies that periodically reinvent polytechnic education, shifting it towards a skills and technology-driven system to boost national development.
Dr. Paul made the call while delivering a lecture at the maiden matriculation ceremony of Vineyard Polytechnic Kuchikau in Karu Local Government Area, a newly established institution dedicated to advancing technical and skills education in Nigeria.
Speaking on the topic “Re-Inventing Nigerian Polytechnic Education for Youth Empowerment,” Dr. Paul, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Entrepreneurial Studies at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, stressed the need for a strategic approach to addressing the nation’s growing skills gap.
“For Nigeria to achieve meaningful technological advancement, there must be increased funding and a clear, consistent policy direction in polytechnic education,” he stated.
He further emphasized the role of the private sector in skills development, calling for a conducive environment to encourage investments in youth-focused programmes. “If we want to curb the over independence on white-collar jobs, we must prioritize skills acquisition and create opportunities for practical learning,” he added.
The Rector of Vineyard Polytechnic, Mr Solomon Agande, also underscored the need for a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s polytechnic education. He highlighted the importance of updated curricula, improved infrastructure, and hands-on training to ensure graduates are equipped for real-world challenges.
“Our focus must be on fostering innovation and equipping students with practical skills that prepare them for self-reliance,” Mr. Agande said. He urged youths to embrace hard work and attitudinal change, stressing that vocational and technical skills are essential for personal and national growth.
