
Prof. Andrew Nkom, Faculty of Education, Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK) has called for the implementation of Instructional Communication Concept Model in addressing poor quality teaching in Nigeria’s education sector.
Nkom who is a Professor of Instructional Technology made the call while presenting the university’s 48th Inaugural Lecture in Keffi local government area of the state on Wednesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the topic of the lecture is “The fourth estate of communication: Breaking the deterioration cycle in Nigerian education”.
According to Nkom, the Instructional Communication Concept Model created by him is an appropriate communication model that will tackle poor quality teaching in the country which is partly attributed to the high failure rates in West African Examination Council (WAEC) among others.
“The decision to focus on teacher production was of evidence that Nigerian education had degenerated into a vicious cycle where the education system produces poor quality teachers from poor quality schools in a degradation cycle,” he said.
He said the model had already achieved acceptance rating mean of 95 percent across the three groups of teachers of primary, secondary and higher education in field trials in Instructional Communication Workshops (ICWs).
He then called on the federal government and stakeholders in the education sector to implement or push for the implementation of the model for improved quality teaching in Nigerian schools.
“The model is is specific to teaching and has been successfully applied in teaching and teacher production. This is a homegrown solution to Nigerian in teaching and teacher production.
“The hope is that this work will be appreciated by its implementation and that in applying this solution, with confidence that it will assist in improving quality of teaching and consequently Nigerian education,” he added.
In a remark, Prof. Sa’adatu Liman, Vice Chancellor, NSUK represented by her Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Theophilus Lagi lauded the inaugural lecturer for the topic which she said was apt..
The NSUK VC said the topic has being able to come up with some models on how to addressed the already decayed system of education in the country and encouraged government of the day to collaborate with professors to utilized such models in addressing issues of education decay.
Liman then described the Inaugural lecture as a tradition in the life of a professor, to redeemed his academic work in his area of specialization. (NAN)
