FuLafia team Fabricates Radiation Shielding Glass

Prof. Abubakar Sadiq of Nuclear Physics at the Federal University Lafia (FULafia) and team of eight other researchers from the institution have fabricated radiation shielding glass.

The Professor made the disclosure while briefing newsmen on Friday in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital.

Sadiq, the Director of Muhammadu Buhari TETfund Centre of Excellence (MBTCE) in FULafia said that the research work was under 2021 TETFund National Research Fund.

He explained that the radiation shielding glass was made using rice husk sourced silica, bismuth and tin bearing minerals ores.

He said the tin bearing mineral ores were recovered from Falgore forest and Tilden Fulani areas of Kano and Bauchi states.

Sadiq, who is the lead researcher, further said that the project is also a collaborative research between the MBTCE, FULafia and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).

“Data from the research is currently undergoing peer review evaluation for publication in some of the top tier scientific journals that are indexed by Web of science.

“The research was part of the effort geared toward the promotion of Nigeria’s local content and solid minerals, cyclic economy and valorisation,” he added.

Sadiq stated that very soon through their effort the country would witness the homemade production of various glasses, including window and door glasses.

“We will soon discuss with our collaborator, NASENI on how to initiate commercialisation phase for this novel product,” he said,” he added. (NAN).
